The Detroit Tigers selected pitchers Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal in the 2018 MLB Draft, including spending the No. 1 overall pick on Mize, an ace out of Auburn.
Now, they're both gone, dealt at the MLB trade deadline in exchange for mostly prospects. That return makes up the bulk of the Tigers' prospect haul from the deadline, which MLB Pipeline ranked No. 4 out of seven teams it identified as loading up on prospects once the dust settled from Monday's wheeling and dealing.
In trading ace Tarik Skubal to the the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tigers landed outfielder Zyhir Hope and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, while adding lefthanded pitching prospect Kash Mayfield and farmhand Jackson Wolf in a deal with the San Diego Padres for Mize.
All four of those players crack Pipeline's top 30 Tigers prospects, with Hope (No. 2), Ryan (5) and Mayfield (6) in the top 10. Hope (No. 25) and Ryan (68) are top 100 overall prospects, according to Pipeline.
"The Tarik Skubal trade has been pretty polarizing in terms of how people thought the Tigers did," MLB Pipeline's Jonathan Mayo writes. "Sure, he was the biggest name on the market, but he is also a rental who will be a free agent at the end of the season, so give credit where it’s due for bringing in a pair of Top 100 prospects in Zyhir Hope and River Ryan to go along with the intriguing Brady Smith. The buzzer-beater trade of Casey Mize to the Padres added Kash Mayfield, giving the Tigers three players now in their top six."

The Tigers also added prospects as players to be named later in earlier deals for outfielder Jahmai Jones (getting lefthander Jojo Ingrassia from the Boston Red Sox) and catcher Jake Rogers (landing righthander and Hillsdale College product Zane Barnhart from the Baltimore Orioles).
The New York Mets topped Pipeline's rankings, with their 11-prospect haul that including eight in the team's top 30.
