Colin Barczi wasn't supposed to pick up a bat.
Barczi has been dealing with lower back soreness that caused him to miss Vanderbilt baseball's last two games against Oklahoma. He was available to catch, but he wasn't supposed to hit in the Commodores' game against Lipscomb. But in the 10th inning, it was Barczi who hit the walk-off single to give Vanderbilt the 5-4 win.
"The first two pitches, kind of ... blew them right by me," Barczi said. "So the ball is kind of riding up, so I just wanted to have a nice flat swing and just hit down on the ball."
The Commodores (27-10) were without right fielder Jacob Humphrey, who was serving an NCAA suspension after his ejection from the series finale against Oklahoma. But Vanderbilt wanted to pinch-run for Mac Rose in the ninth inning and its only two other catchers on the roster, freshmen Aukai Kea and AJ DePaolo, are redshirting.
Thus, Barczi came into the game and got his moment.
Vanderbilt got five strong innings from Austin Nye, who gave up two runs with two walks and six strikeouts. But the Commodores struggled to hit all game. They scored two runs in the first inning after a sacrifice fly and a steal of home brought in two batters who had walked and gotten hit by a pitch. Braden Holcomb also hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to make the lead 4-2.
Lipscomb scored one run in the seventh off Alex Kranzler and one in the ninth off Tommy O'Rourke, the latter coming on a two-out wild pitch. Kranzler and O'Rourke have been two of Vanderbilt's most reliable relievers this season but neither pitched in the Oklahoma series.
Barczi said that he would be available for the Commodores' series against Georgia, which is a Thursday through Saturday series.
OKLAHOMA TAKEAWAYS Vanderbilt baseball loses series to Oklahoma, still in contention to host regional: What we learned
"We're down a bunch of starters right now, so we needed to ride it out," Tim Corbin said. "We don't have much on the bench, so he just needed to come in and catch and we were hoping we could win the game before his turn came up to bat again. ... Thankfully, put a good swing on a two strike pitch."
