After Vanderbilt baseball lost to Middle Tennessee, 5-3, on Tuesday night at Hawkins Field, Tim Corbin said that his message to the team "starts with an F and ends with a K."

The Commodores (30-11) never led in the game that started with a leadoff home run from the Blue Raiders' Eston Snider.

"I don't want to be sour to the point where I take anything away from that group, because they beat us," Corbin said. "So offensively, we were off the ball. We took fastball strikes with a runner at third base. We missed signs. The level of mental engagement is not what it needed to be in order to play and beat a team like this. And they clearly just beat us. I mean, they out-pitched us, they out-hit us, and they were more mentally engaged than we were. Had we walked out of the ballpark here with a win tonight, we still wouldn't deserve to win. We did not deserve to win that baseball game."

Austin Nye also allowed runs in the second and fourth innings, the first time allowing more than two runs in an outing this season.

Vanderbilt's offense was quiet for most of the game. Rustan Rigdon hit a solo home run in the third inning but that was the Commodores' only extra-base hit. The Commodores scored two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Mac Rose and an error.

Middle Tennessee took the lead in the eighth inning after a hit batter came around to score on a wild pitch, a passed ball and a single. A second wild pitch brought in another run.

Vanderbilt got two runners on in the ninth inning but Colin Barczi struck out to end the game.

Vanderbilt is still ranked No. 3 in RPI, the same ranking it had before the game, according to Warren Nolan. The Commodores are in contention to host a regional with a strong finish to the season, but maintaining a high RPI will be a necessity.
