PLATTSBURGH — Team champion and individual weight class winners will be determined today when the Section VII Wrestling Championships are held at Beekmantown Central School.
Weigh-ins will be held from 8 to 9 a.m., with the procession of wrestlers taking place at 9:30 a.m.
First-round matches will begin immediately after, with the semifinals scheduled for 11 a.m., wrestle-backs at noon and championship matches at 1:30 p.m.
Host Beekmantown is the defending section champion.
Recently crowned CVAC champion, Saranac has five top seeds — Liam Smart (110), Colby Roesler (126), Teegan Smith (144), Branigan Boulds (165) and Landen Gadway (175).
Section VII Dual Meet champion Peru will have four top seeds — Alyn Capen (103), Mason Starke (138), Nathan Beattie (150) and Brody Blaise-Smith (190).
Northern Adirondack will feature Jackson LaBarge (118), Nolan Gilmore (132) and Hayden Bartlemus (157) as top seeds, and AuSable Valley with Warren Pray (215) and Nate Rondeau (285) leading the way.
The 126-pound weight class will be as competitive as any with three wrestlers — Roesler (31-9), Beekmantown’s Mason Facteau (30-14) and Peru’s Jeremiah King (28-11), all with 28 wins or more on the season.
Peru enters the tournament on a roll following a strong showing down the stretch.
The Nighthawks, who were the defending CVAC champions, dropped a 42-35 decision to Saranac and a 37-36 setback to NAC early in the season but have been very tough of late.
Peru recorded a 39-33 victory over Saranac in the title match of the Section VII Dual Meet Championship on Jan. 14 and then defeated the Spartans, 57-18, Jan. 28 in league action, representing Saranac’s only loss in the CVAC.
The Spartans had a big 38-36 win over NAC early in the season to help get the leg up in the league.
“Peru was the favorite going into the season,” Saranac coach Heath Smith said following the Spartans’ CVAC title-winning 38-33 match over Beekmantown on Wednesday.
“They didn’t have their full line-up early in the season that they now have, but our kids will be ready to compete.”
