Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson speaks to the media before a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. | Teren Kowatsch/Roundtable Sports
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners will be looking to secure a winning record on a six-game homestand extend its series win streak to two with an upcoming three game set against the Toronto Blue Jays at T-Mobile Park. First pitch in game one of the series will be at 7:10 p.m. PT on Friday.
Unfortunately for the Mariners, they'll be without one of their best players for the 2025 American League Championship Series rematch.
Seattle placed center fielder Julio Rodriguez on the seven-day concussion injured list Friday. In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected the contract of utility player Miles Mastrobuoni from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.
Rodriguez exited Thursday's 1-0 win against the Los Angeles Angels after he was hit in the back of the head in the bottom of the first inning while running to second base. The play disrupted a potential double play and resulted in a throwing error attributed to Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel.
Rodriguez was able to have enough wherewithal to quickly get up and move to third base following the error, but immediately doubled over and was checked on by trainers at third.
The three-time All-Star stayed in center field for the top of the second, but was pulled from the game before the third inning began.
Per pregame comments made by Seattle manager Dan Wilson on Friday, Rodriguez is expected to stay on the injured list throughout the duration of the seven days, but will be permitted to take part in baseball activities when his health permits it.
The seven-day IL stint means that Rodriguez will be out for the entire series against the Blue Jays, and the team's upcoming three-game road series against the Miami Marlins.
"When the adrenaline of the moment ran out, kind of felt lightheaded at the time and just wasn't feeling himself," Wilson said in a pregame interview Friday. "Came in today and wasn't feeling himself again. With head injuries, you have to be so careful. So I think giving him the extra time and precaution is definitely the way to go at this point."
Rodriguez has slashed .259/.323/.424 with a .747 OPS in 87 games this season and has hit 15 doubles and 14 home runs with 40 RBIs.

Luckily, the Mariners' injury fortunes weren't as bad as they could have been Friday.
Rodriguez's replacement for Thursday's game, Victor Robles, also exited Thursday's contest after he was hit by a pitch on the forearm in the bottom of the third inning in his first at-bat filling in for Rodriguez.
Robles took part in early batting practice Friday and had a sleeve on the arm he got hit on.
Robles will be in the lineup for Friday's game against Toronto. He'll play in center field and hit eighth in the order.
