The story was updated at 7:46 p.m. PT to reflect outfielder Victor Robles also exiting the game.
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners' injury troubles seem to keep popping up in unfortunate and unexpected ways.
In a series finale against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday at T-Mobile Park, center fielder Julio Rodriguez was the M's' first base runner of the game, reaching first via a walk.
In the plate appearance after Rodriguez's, designated hitter Dominic Canzone hit into a fielder's choice that seemed to look set up for a routine double play for the Angels.
Los Angeles first baseman Nolan Schanuel fielded the ball and delivered a throw to second base, which hit off the head of Rodriguez. The ball ricocheted into the outfield, which allowed Rodriguez to reach third.
Rodriguez was noticeably grimacing after reaching third, at one point doubling over while being checked by head trainer Kyle Torgerson and manager Dan Wilson.
Rodriguez stayed in the game and returned to center field in the top of the second, but was once again checked on the bench between innings.
Ultimately, Rodriguez was pulled before the third inning began and replaced in center field by outfielder Victor Robles.
The Mariners' injury concerns didn't end there. Left fielder Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch in the same inning Rodriguez was hit in the head by a throw and was also checked by trainers. Robles, in his first at-bat in replacement of Rodriguez, was also hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third and checked by trainers.
Both Arozarena and Robles initially stayed in the game following their respective hit-by-pitches, but Robles ultimately exited the game in the top of the fifth. Right fielder Luke Raley moved from right to center field and utility player Weston Wilson entered the game in right field.
Rodriguez's exit comes on the same day that Canzone and Raley returned to the lineup following a two-day break. Canzone is dealing with lingering left hamstring soreness and Raley has been out with left forearm fatigue, which has forced him to wear a sleeve on his left arm.
Canzone and Raley were out of the lineup Tuesday and received another day's rest on the midweek off-day Wednesday.
There was no information on the exact reasoning of Rodriguez's exit during the game. But, given the fact Rodriguez was hit in the head by a throw, it's possible that he was put in concussion protocol and pulled from the game for safe measure.
Rodriguez has slashed .259/.323/.424 with a .747 OPS in 87 games this season and has hit 15 doubles and 14 home runs with 40 RBIs. He's also stolen 12 bases in 15 attempts.
Rodriguez's 14 home runs was tied with Raley for the most on the team entering Thursday.

Julio Rodríguez just took a 78.2 mph throw from Nolan Schanuel directly off the back of his helmet.
It allowed him to go first-to-third on a double play attempt, but also left him needing a breather after.
