Hugh Douglas or Vonnie Holiday. Don't know which, but it could happen today.

Hope we don't wash out on Holiday in the fallout.

I don't think the Cardinals will get Holliday. He would have signed by now if he was coming to the desert.

I believe he has been waiting to find out who the loser of the Hugh Douglas sweepstakes is so he can sign with either the Seahawks or Chiefs.

so if we do not end up with Holliday..what is next?? no value at this position..for the 6th pick if suggs is gone..

we could really be hurting at defensive end..

That would be nothing new?

Does anyone else get the scary feeling that we are going to head into the season with much the same D-line that we have had the last two years that has produced under 20 sacks???

No because we will take either Dewayne Robertson or Jimmy Kennedy (please Robertson) at the sixth spot. So in the very least we will have two good defensive tackles.

I wouldn't say we are out of the Holliday sweepstakes yet. Dexter didn;t look like he was coming but he did. I remain optimistic. We must sign at least one more defensive starter, period to be improved over last year.

yes and they may help a tad as a rookie but the bottom line is our most glaring need is one if not two quality edge rushers!

We could be fine with our current DTs although an upgrade is always good but we really need to find some outside pass rush its imperative!

I still can't see how the Chiefs can sign ANYBODY. Where are they getting the cap from? Seattle, maybe, but I can't see KC. I think we are still in the hunt. We may have to pay more, but I think we aren't out of the equation.

We have got to improve our DL with a FA. Blue chip rookies alone won't do it. The good (?) news is, it won't take much for us to upgrade our DL.

I keep hearin stamina issues and weight problems with Kennedy. I think I'd rather have the motor guy in robertson than the physical "potential" and bad stamina of Kennedy. We've had too many of those players.

Could you please list your sources for the Holliday info? Since KFFL has been down, I can't go there.

What was the origin of the Holliday Fires Agent story, and what was the origin of the "Seattle's Either Going to Sign Douglas or Holliday" story.

Skkorp may be right. Trying to read the tea leaves, it sounds to me like (a) Vonnie preferred Seattle, (b) Seattle is about to sign Douglas and (c) Vonnie is pissed because he only has Arizona as his other option.

But tea leaves have a habit of being wrong.

The thought of going into a 3rd year in a row without an improved pass rush, especially from the edge sickens me.

BUT...

The draft could be kind to us

June 1st cuts could give us a shot at Tony Brackens etc.

Johnson and KVB (Alton Moore, Wakefield) could have break out years

The way FA is shaping up I would like the Cards to throw their hats into the Hugh Douglass courting process, doubt this will happen though

Without a DE the cards will be worst than last year. At least last year they had offensive fire power but not this. Without a DE the signing of dexter jackson becomes moot because we all now you need a pass rush to be an effective DB. Without holliday or douglas this team will again have the worst sack total in the league. We can call this a bad offseason if no D-linemen sign. I personally would be extremely dissapointed.

I would speculate that the cards may have put out some feelers on douglas and he may have not been interested - or his price was too high..I think he is 32 and has said he only wants to play for a contender..but seattle and jacksonville were not contenders last season - but it seems they have the reputation as up and comers.. I am assuming this because the cards mentioned that they inquired about signing takeo spikes..and he was not interested.. given our poor pass rush - I feel it is unlikely that we never placed a call to douglas (his agent)..

We've tried to address the pass rush in the draft, and isn't everyone clamoring for the famous June 1st cuts every year? We're always supposed to help ourselves then and we never end up doing it, usually because the cuts turn out to be anticlimactic. We have to be proactie in fixing this, not hoping that 'maybe' things will happen right.

I wasn't presenting the hopes post as a solid plan. Since FA has turned out as it has then put on some rose colored glasses and take a gulp of koolaid.

That's what I was trying to say.

Why aren't the Cardinals going after Hugh Douglas?
Ahhhh! The 64-trillion dollar question.

Which is really the issue - The competition for Douglas was supposed to be so steep (and expensive) that the Cards reportedly opted out.

Which begs the question - If (a) The likelihood of our drafting Suggs is fast-declining and (b) Douglas is the best (heck the ONLY!) pass rusher available in free agency - why not break the bank and do whatever it takes to get healthy in our weakest area for once and for all?

I had been an advocate of overpaying players early to shift the momentum. It turned out we didn't have to do that. So let's use that money to address our highest priority by going after a proven sackmaster.

Jump in now, make a pre-emptive bid for Douglas, and be set at RDE.

The only other things that could be conceivably holding us back could be: (a) he could be a "me-guy" like Simeon or (b) he doesn't want to play in AZ. (Just speculation, but maybe that has something to do with it).

One other thing, bringing in Holliday - while an improvement over what we've got - creates a bigger logjam amoung our non-edge defensive ends - i.e. you can't play VDB, Wakefield and Vonnie all at the same time. But with Douglas (backed up by DJ) on the right side and VDB (backed up by "Fraid") on the left side, we have the right player in the right spots.

It ain't gonna happen, but in my opinion, Hugh Douglas is worth paying more because he represents a better fit to the Cards in terms of our roster needs.

Finally - if Holliday is having "reservations" about coming here, I'd hope that Graves and Mac would get in his face, find out what those reservations are and do a supersalesman job of clearing them up - assuming it's at all possible.

Jeff - I live in th Philly market and can tell you Douglas is not a me first kinda guy, so you can eliminate that concern. He is a fantastic locker room presence and leader. I think he is also more interested in winning then getting the biggest pay day so that's why he probably isn't interested in us. I believe he is just trying to show the Eagles his market value and hoping they can get close to that amount.

Who knows though, with the Cards recent activity in FA Douglass may start to consider us. If the Cards get a WR in FA and Emmitt this may be enough to convince Douglass to come on board.

Disclaimer for Stout:

Not something I expect to happen but hope will happen. ;)
