As expected, the Seattle Seahawks were somewhat gutted during the first day of NFL free agency. The legal tampering window saw keynote players like Kenneth Walker III, Coby Bryant, and Boye Mafe sign elsewhere. One player who was also expected to leave but didn't was wide receiver Rashid Shaheed.

The Seahawks agreed to terms with Shaheed on a three-year contract worth $51 million, with $34.7 million in full guarantees. The new deal pays the speedy playmaker a sizable $17 million per season. General manager John Schneider went above and beyond to retain Shaheed.

You initially felt the Seahawks would definitely retain Shaheed once he was acquired via trade by Schneider at the deadline. But then Shaheed played so incredibly well in Seattle that the belief was he'd receive a huge payday in free agency (he did). That may have priced him outside of Schneider's comfort zone, but Seattle crunched the numbers and found a way to make it work.

The wide receiver market continues to explode this offseason. Alec Pierce got $29 million annually to stay in Indianapolis. Shaheed was one of the most intriguing wideouts available in free agency, hence the lucrative extension to keep him. Schneider opened free agency by being cautious with his money, but he was willing to make sacrifices to re-sign Shaheed.
