The Seattle Seahawks pulled a mini shocker on Sunday. The initial belief was that head coach Mike Macdonald would stay in house to appoint Klint Kubiak's successor at offensive coordinator. That's ultimately not what happened, as the Seahawks hired former San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury to be the new OC.
When Macdonald whiffed on his first-ever offensive coordinator hire, Ryan Grubb, he went to the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree to find Kubiak. With that helping lead to a Super Bowl 60 victory, Macdonald is finding comfort in returning to the Shanahan tree to hire Fleury. Hopefully it'll yield similar results.
Coach Shanahan is notorious when it comes to blocking his assistants from departing his staff for opportunities elsewhere. He was not allowed to block Fleury from joining his division rival Seahawks. Because Fleury is going from being a position coach to offensive coordinator, NFL rules view that as a clear promotion.
Fleury was also Shanahan's run-game coordinator in San Francisco. That should lead to direct continuity for the Seahawks on offense, as he's obviously familiar with Kubiak's outside-zone run system. Macdonald continues to go outside the box when making appointments. The early indications are that Fleury was an incredibly creative and savvy hire.

Seahawks are expected to hire 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury as new offensive coordinator, per @AdamSchefter
Gives Mike Macdonald continuity from Klint Kubiak in the Kyle/Mike Shanahan outside-zone run system. Fleury was Kyle Shanahan’s run game coordinator in SF.
