SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota State women’s basketball team walked into the Summit League Tournament as the three-time reigning champion, and the Jackrabbits completed the four-peat behind a dominant performance from Brooklyn Meyer.
Meyer posted nearly identical statlines across the three games and averaged 25 points, nine rebounds and three blocks on her way to tournament MVP.
“Brooklyn has just been insane,” SDSU senior guard Ellie Colbeck said. “So consistent, so steady. Just such a good leader for us on and off the court. Her freshman year, I remember thinking, ‘man, this girl is going to be so good, and she proved me well beyond what I thought.”
“Getting to play alongside of her has just been so much fun,” SDSU senior guard Maddie Mathiowetz said. “We said we’re going to go into this, and we’re going to finish it together. That’s exactly what we did. We came out with four championships.”

The senior class of Meyer, Mathiowetz and Colbeck go four-for-four with championships and racked up an impressive 76-2 record against the Summit League.
“Our seniors are unbelievable,” SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston said. “To get through this with only losing two games in their career, not the tournament but as a whole, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before. They’ve meant so much to our program, I’m really happy for them.”
Those two blemishes came this season – to NDSU and USD – and those setbacks helped the Jacks refocus.
“I don’t know if we would’ve won those two games, if we would have come out as champions,” Colbeck said. “So, I think sometimes you need to go through those losses to grow and learn and maybe those things that you need to get better at.”
SDSU now awaits its NCAA Tournament draw, and outside of those seniors, much of the team’s nucleus will play expanded roles from previous years.
“It’s just going to be such an experience for our whole team,” SDSU sophomore wing Hilary Behrens said. “We’re pretty young, so all those young girls finally get to experience what March Madness feels like. So, it’ll be awesome.”
This championship is the program’s 13th tournament title. Selection Sunday is this Sunday, when the Jackrabbits will learn their NCAA Tournament fate.
