LEEDS, AL – Scott McLaughlin crashed toward the end of Saturday morning's IndyCar practice for the Alabama Indy Grand Prix, effectively ending the practice session.
McLaughlin's right tires got into the grass as he prepared to enter Turn 1, sending him into a 180-degree spin. His No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet backed through gravel and grass, lifting as it careened into the catchfence.
The car pushed through the catchfence, forcing a red flag to end the practice session and a long effort to extract the car.
McLaughlin was seen and released from the medical unit, as he said the crash looked worse than it was. McLaughlin and Team Penske are moving to a backup car for the rest of the weekend, per an IndyCar spokesperson.
"The damage doesn't look that bad," McLaughlin said after exiting the medical unit. "I think the crash was pretty theatrical, but I feel fine and just want to get back out there."
An Indy NXT race is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and IndyCar qualifying is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
