McLaughlin's IndyCar Sliced Through Barber BarrierIndyCar on Fox / X
Scott McLaughlin walked away from his Team Penske No. 3 Chevrolet Dallara IndyCar after losing control on the entry to turn one and slamming it backwards through the tire and fencing barrier Saturday afternoon.
Coming out of 17 onto the front straight, McLaughlin ran high through the front straight and made a misjudgment coming to the apex of turn one, dropped his right rear and went slidding backwards through the gravel and through the fence.
From the in-car camera, you can see McLaughlin bring his hands up the side of his neck and face as he braced for the backwards impact.
McLaughlin is out of the medical center following the impact, and IndyCar Barber Practice 2 was under a red flag as the AMR safety team worked to free the car from the fencing. The car was freed from it's fencing around the same time McLaughlin exited the medical center.
"It looked a lot worse than it felt," McLaughlin assured the Fox Sports IndyCar team.
The No. 3 Team Penske crew will attempt to make the repairs needed to get the car back out on track for qualifying as it appears that the damage is minimal enough as the car luckily made a surprisingly clean cut through the foam and fencing.
McLaughlin walked Fox Sports' Georgia Henneberry through his view of the crash and shared his hope to get back out there for qualifying.
"It’s not a laughing matter." McLaughlin added about his misjudgement, "It’s a mistake, and I have to be better."
With damage to cables running through that section of the fence, IndyCar practice was called early. Alex Palou was the current fastest in Practice 2, with McLaughlin topping Practice 1.
