MIAMI — Another start, another record set by Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara.
The Marlins ace went seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts on 108 pitches to help the Marlins (59-59) snap a four-game losing streak with a 7-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels (45-72) on Saturday.
This one felt more special for Alcantara.
Alcantara struck out Los Angeles Angels right fielder Josh Lowe for the first out of the third inning in the second game of a three-game series, officially surpassing right-hander Ricky Nolasco for the most innings pitched in franchise history (1,226.0).
Play stopped briefly after the out was recorded, allowing fans inside loanDepot park to show their appreciation for Alcantara, who has been with the organization since 2018, a year before the Marlins rebranded with their new logo.
Alcantara has set numerous records with the club and won several prestigious awards, including unanimously winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, when he went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA in 32 starts, covering 228.2 innings.
This season, Alcantara has passed Nolasco in other categories, including the franchise record for strikeouts (1,002) on June 23 against the Texas Rangers at loanDepot park.
Additionally, Alcantara’s 30th career win at loanDepot park set a new Marlins record for most wins at the ballpark.
As play moved into the eighth inning, Alcantara spoke with team in-game reporter, pregame/postgame host and radio analyst Kelly Saco in the Marlins dugout about his performance and what holding the franchise record for most innings pitched means to him personally.
The television broadcast also showed Alcantara, with a big smile on his face, getting a lot of hugs from his teammates, including pitchers Janson Junk and Tyler Phillips.
Alcantara’s teammates gave him plenty of run support on his historic afternoon, and Miami’s infield did most of the damage on offense Saturday.
Second baseman Xavier Edwards collected two hits and drove in three of Miami's seven runs.
Shortstop Otto Lopez, who had been struggling a bit at the plate, joined Edwards with two hits, scored a run, drew a walk in the seventh inning and drove in two runs as well.
It was the offensive performance the Marlins were looking for after scoring just three runs in Friday’s loss and leaving 13 runners on base.
The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1:40 p.m. ET, with Marlins right-hander Ryan Gusto (0-3, 4.80 ERA) expected to take the mound.
