Sandy Alcantara found another statistical category to pass Ricky Nolasco in the record books.
The Miami Marlins ace went seven innings to set the new franchise record for quality starts with 111.
That’s the good news. The bad news is the Marlins lost to the Houston Astros 5-2 on Wednesday to be swept for the third consecutive time. The Marlins return home on Friday with a season-high nine-game losing streak over their heads.
Alcantara said after the game that the Marlins, who have not won a game since the MLB All-Star Game, have “been playing way different than the first half.”
“I think we gotta put things together and find a way to put ourselves in that situation that we were in the first half,” Alcantara said. “This is baseball; someday you win 20, and someday you lose 25. We gotta keep fighting together.”
Alcantara went seven innings with five runs allowed on nine hits with as many home runs as strikeouts (3). The game was tied 2-2 until the eighth inning. Back-to-back home runs by Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes ended Alcantara’s night and Miami’s hopes of snapping the skid.
Alvarez is in the midst of an MVP-caliber season. He is making a run at the Triple Crown by leading the American League in batting average (.328), home runs (34) and RBIs (77). Alvarez is 17-for-33 with five homers and nine RBIs in his past nine games. His 34 bombs are three shy of his career high of 37 set in 2022 when the Astros last won the World Series.
An RBI single by Nick Allen gave the Astros an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Jeremy Peña hit a solo home run in the third inning to put Houston up 2-0. Peña homered against the Marlins in each game during the series.
The Marlins tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Javier Sanoja and a single from Joe Mack. Heriberto Hernandez went 2-for-4 to lead the Marlins at the plate and extend his on-base streak to 15 games.
Peter Lambert pitched six innings for the Astros, allowing two runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Marlins will host the San Diego Padres for a three-game series starting Friday. The Padres will send RHP German Marquez (4-2, 5.24 ERA) to the mound for the opener. The Marlins have yet to announce who will replace the injured Max Meyer on Friday.
