The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason looking to improve at wide receiver, offensive line and edge rush. They accomplished the first two stated goals in a big way.
At wideout, the Niners made three key additions to their receiver room. They added Mike Evans and Christian Kirk as proven NFL players before drafting De'Zhaun Stribling, a yards-after-catch specialist who can turn small gains into explosive plays.
San Francisco also added multiple offensive linemen, but retaining Trent Williams was the most important move of the offseason. With that, we feel confident that the offensive line is as close to a finished product as we could expect. The defensive side does not have that feel.
The Niners have yet to address their pass rush with questions over the depth after Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams. If both players are healthy, the team will have a dangerous pass rush. Even so, that places a lot of pressure on Williams and Bosa to be available for a full season.
One way to address pass rush is to add cornerbacks that allow the rush to get in the backfield. Cleveland Browns analyst Dylan Feltovich of Browns Wire suggests that the Niners are a good trade candidate to bring in pro bowl cornerback Denzel Ward.
Here's what Feltovich shared on the possibility of the move.
"Another team in a similar position to the Lions is the San Francisco 49ers, who have invested in multiple veterans leading up to the 2026 season.
Despite signing two proven cornerbacks this offseason in Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones, the 49ers' defensive back room does not feature a true, established top cornerback. Luckily for the Browns, San Francisco has multiple young playmakers on the roster who could be included in a trade, which fits general manager Andrew Berry’s mindset of acquiring unproven players to fill the void left by Ward, such as 2024 second-round pick Renardo Green and 2025 third-round pick Upton Stout."

It's not that difficult to figure out what the Browns would want in exchange for Ward. Cleveland would want young talent either through trading for up-and-coming players on the Niners' roster or through acquiring draft picks.
Trading for Ward would cost the 49ers for the future depending on how much they give up. That said, if the Niners are truly "all in," like their early moves have indicated, adding Ward could be a real possibility.
We will keep an eye on whether or not the 49ers look to add cornerback or edge rusher to fortify their defense in the upcoming season.
