The San Diego Toreros have landed on a new head coach, as they're expected to hire Iowa State Cyclones assistant JR Blount to replace Steve Lavin, who was fired last month. ESPN's Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello were the first to report the news.
Blount is considered a rising star in the coaching ranks, having served as an assistant to Iowa State head coach TJ Otzelberger for the past five seasons. He's spent time as an assistant coach at Saint Leo University, Drake and Colorado State before landing in Ames with Otzelberger, building a reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country along the way.
Prior to his coaching career, Blount was a three-year captain for Loyola Chicago and was named the team's most valuable player twice.
Now, after 16 seasons as an assistant coach, Blount will take on his first head coaching role with San Diego, a program that has struggled in recent seasons.
In 2025-26, the Toreros finished with a 12-21 overall record and went 5-13 in WCC play. They won one game in the WCC tournament over Loyola Marymount before falling to Seattle University, 58-56, on Friday, ending their season.
Now, with Blount coming into the fold, San Diego enters a new chapter of its program, welcoming its eighth head coach since rising to the Division I ranks.
