The end of the season for the New Orleans Saints is the engine behind the optimism for the team in 2027. Tyler Shough and the offense won games, the defense came together, and Chris Olave looked like the player the Saints bet on when they drafted him in the first round.
However, not everything at the end of the season was good news. Olave was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs and missed the season finale against Atlanta. It's been five months, but Olave still isn't cleared for team drills. This shouldn't be a massive concern and the Saints are right to take it slow with the former Ohio State receiver.
Olave spoke about the incident in late May after participating in some individual drills.
"It was crazy," Olave said. "I didn't really know before when they told me, I ain't really know what a blood clot was, but once they told me, they explained the whole situation that was going on, I feel like it was tough at first.
"But I just put my best foot forward, (and am) just trying to do everything right so I can be healthy at the beginning of the year."
Kellen Moore spoke to the media yesterday about Olave.
"He hasn't been able to do the team activities obviously throughout OTAs," coach Kellen Moore said Wednesday, via Nola.com. "The blood clot was related to not participating in team and some of those things."
Olave is seeking a contract extension, so it's smart for both sides to take things slow. If the Saints are going to commit long-term money to Olave, it's important to ensure his health. For Olave, proving he's healthy and good to go could add more zeroes to his extension.
There's no reason to push Olave, given his grasp of the offense and rapport built with Shough. A blood clot should be checked, double checked, and triple checked before any sort of contact occurs. There isn't a reason to be overly concerned about Olave.
An extension and a return to the field will likely happen before training camp begins for Olave.
