For the second consecutive night, St. Paul won a one-run game at Toledo.
However, where the Saints pitching was on full display in Thursday’s 1-0 victory, Friday belong to the hitters as St. Paul busted out the bats to prevail by a score of 10-9.
Despite the exploding scoreboard, there were only two home runs hit in the game — and both came in the first inning.
St. Paul right fielder Matt Wallner logged the first runs of the game by plating shortstop Kaelen Culpepper with his seventh homer of the season, a one-out blast to right center in the top of the first.
Toledo center fielder Max Clark, the No. 1 prospect of the Detroit Tigers, followed Wallner with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame that made the score 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
The next seven innings featured at least one run scored by either team. The Mud Hens tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the third, but the Saints countered with two scores in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Both teams continued to score on one another in every frame until a scoreless ninth finished the contest off in favor of St. Paul.
Every Saints starter recorded at least one hit and/or one run scored except for Kyler Fedko. The left fielder who has often figured prominently in St. Paul’s offensive numbers, suffered the ignominy of an 0 for 5 night with three strikeouts. His batting average still stands at .289 on the season.
Culpepper went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI; he is hitting .277 this season. Wallner is batting .268 after a 2 for 4 night with four RBI and one run scored.
Third baseman Henry Kusiak, in his third game with the Saints since his reassignment from the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored to lift his average to .154.
Grant Hartwig, who came on in relief of starter Ty Langenberg in the fourth, pitched one inning of two-hit, two-strikeout ball to claim the win and improve to 2-2. Trent Baker, the last of seven hurlers used by St. Paul, earned the save by tossing a two-hit, one-strikeout ninth.
It was the third straight win for the Saints after losing the series opener at Toledo on Tuesday. The two teams take the field again at 6:05 p.m. Saturday night. Aaron Rozek (0-0, 2.77 ERA) takes the ball for St. Paul. The Mud Hens have not yet named a starter.
