Five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as St. Paul made it two wins in a row at Toledo with a 1-0 victory Thursday night.
Austin Voth made his second start for the Saints. He didn’t qualify for the win, but struck out eight batters while allowing three hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings of work.
Drew Smith relieved him with two on and two out in the fifth and extinguished the Mud Hens’ best offensive threat with a strikeout to end the frame.
C.J. Culpepper came on from there, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one as the game remained locked in a scoreless tie into the latter innings.
Taylor Rashi relieved Culpepper in the eighth, making his Saints’ debut. He struck out two in a spotless eighth inning and went on to earn the win.
It was a win that came courtesy of right fielder Gabriel Gonzalez, who logged the game’s lone run with his 10th homer of the season to give St. Paul all the edge it needed in the contest.
Raul Brito took to the hill in the bottom of the ninth, and like Rashi, struck out two in a flawless frame to lock down St. Paul’s triumph and earn his third save of the year.
The Saints and Mud Hens are back at it on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. Ty Langenberg (2-2, 6.43) goes to the hill for St. Paul against Toledo’s Dylan File (4-2, 4.56).
