The only silver lining to losing in the playoffs is that you are guaranteed retribution. Either the team that beats you wins the championship, and you can take solace in knowing you lost to the best, or you get to watch the team that sent your team packing suffer an excruciating elimination.

Boston Bruins fans did not have to wait long to get their retribution.

The Buffalo Sabres were on top of the world two weeks ago when they beat the Bruins in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They celebrated their first playoff series win since 2007 accordingly.

But the celebration did not last long. The Sabres were tasked with defeating the Montreal Canadiens for a chance to play in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Buffalo won Game 1, but was completely blown out in Games 2 and 3, allowing the Canadiens to outscore them 11-3. They found themselves trailing in Game 6, on the brink of elimination, but rallied from down 3-1 to win 8-3 and force a Game 7 back on their home ice.

The city of Buffalo is known to have some of the most passionate fans alive, and they were out in full force on Monday night. The players gave the fans all they could handle. The Sabres quickly fell behind 2-0 before clawing back, in true Buffalo fashion, and tying the score in the third period.

Regulation was not enough to settle this cross-country rivalry. It took more than 11 minutes of overtime hockey to crown a winner, but in the end, it would be the Montreal Canadiens advancing on a heartbreaking goal.

In a game that featured one unbelievable save after another, a wrist shot from north of the left hash squeaked through to beat goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and end the Sabres' season.

The Sabres fall to 1-7 all-time in Game 7s. But, on the bright side, the Buffalo Bills' season is right around the corner.
