Ryan Jeffers is one step closer to returning to Target Field.

The Twins’ starting catcher, who was enjoying a career-best season before going on the injured list in late May with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, began his rehab assignment Friday with a 2 for 4 night at the plate as the Saints topped visiting Buffalo 4-3 at CHS Field. He served as St. Paul’s designated hitter, batting out of the No. 2 spot, in the contest.

Another recent Twin, right fielder Matt Wallner went 1 for 2 with a solo homer. A hoped-for future Twin, center fielder Walker Jenkins, also hit a solo homer as part of a 2 for 4 effort that raised his batting average to .280; it was Jenkins’ third round-tripper in a Saints uniform.

Also getting in on the solo home run parade was Cody Morissette. The third baseman also went 2 for 4 with his sixth homer for the Saints.

The only St. Paul run scored while keeping the ball in the park was on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Hendry Mendez that drove home Wallner in the opening inning.

Kendry Rojas, who came on in relief of Saints starter Ryan Gallagher with two outs in the fifth, claimed the win despite allowing two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Gallagher allowed two hits and no runs in 4 2/3 innings of work; he also struck out five batters while walking just one to take some of the air out of his ERA, which dipped to 6.89.

Reliever Paulshawn Pasqualotto, who only arrived in St. Paul from Double-A Wichita on Thursday, didn’t have to wait long to accumulate his first save as he pitched the ninth inning. The Bisons made things interesting in their final turn at-bat by scoring an unearned run off Pasqualotto before the right-hander finished off the contest.

St. Paul improved to 47-36 overall with the win, Buffalo fell to 41-44. The two teams go at it again with a 7:07 p.m. start on Saturday. Former Twins pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson is set to take the mound for Buffalo (a farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays). The Saints have yet to announce a starting pitcher.
