Rudyard and Sault runners take top spots in Rudyard Lions Summerfest Triathlon

The 29th Annual Rudyard Lions Summerfest Triathlon and 5K Run took place on Sunday, July 26 with a wide variety of participants.

Runners competed in the 5K run, short course triathlon and team triathlon events.

According to race organizers, the overall male winner for the 5K run was Daniel Scarpino (16.46) from Sault, Ontario, and the top female was Quinn Rogers (26.48) of Rudyard. The first overall finisher in the reverse triathlon format male division was Christopher Schnettler from Sault, Michigan (1:21.56). In the female division, the overall winner was Cassandra Gallagher of Sault, Michigan (1:24.38).

There were also winners in individual age categories. Triathlon winners include:

  • Age 19 and under, male: Seth Templeton (1:34.08, Rudyard) placed first, Oliver Dankert (1:39.33, Rudyard) was second and Zane Nichols (1:40.39, Trout Lake) was third
  • Age 19 and under, female: Emma DeYoung (2:02.15, Rudyard) placed first
  • Age 20-29, female: Kate Kabat in first (1:39.54, Minneapolis, Minnesota), placed first
  • Age 30-39, male: Adam Fuhrman (1:26.10, Pickford) placed first and Keith Lounds (1:38.18, Dafter) was second
  • Age 40-49, male: Kirk Tews (1:26.33, Sault, Michigan) placed first, Allan Veler (1:40.41, Fitchburg, Wisconsin) was second, and Joe Dankert (1:41.02, Rudyard) was third
  • Age 40-49, female: Elizabeth Veler (1:49.27, Fitchburg, Wisconsin) placed first
  • Age 50-59, female: Rachel McCoy (1:28.04, Sault, Michigan), placed first, Kelly Kabat (1:45.20, Golden Valley, Minnesota) was second and Deborah Gallagher (1:52.22, Sault, Michigan) was third
  • Age 60-69, male: Gary Duke (1:41.43, Linden, Michigan) placed first

Team results include:

  • Coed teams: “MeAn Grandpa” 1:22.34, Rudyard) placed first with second going to “Kabat Send It” (1:24.07, Golden Valley, Minnesota)
  • All-female teams: “Tri-ing to Stay Sane” (1:47.40, Dafter) placed first and second went to “Chicken Legs” (1:48.20, Dafter)
  • All-male teams: “Rudyard Lions Challenge -JJG” (1:37.41, Rudyard) placed first

Team “MeAn Grandpa” were named the winners of the Lions Challenge with the best overall team time. They chose Lions Bear Lake Camp as the charity organization that will receive a $250 donation check from the Rudyard Lions Club.

5K winners include:

  • Age 11 and under, male: Callen Fuhrman (37.09, Pickford) placed first
  • Age 12-15, female: Quinn Rogers (26.48, Rudyard) placed first, Selah Beery (27.11) was second and third went to Emma Folkersma (27.17, Kinross)
  • Age 16-19, male: Eli Folkersma (19.40, Rudyard) placed first
  • Age 20-29, male: Hayden Mills (18.05, Traverse City) placed first and second was Dylan Mills (20.55, Grand Ledge, Michigan)
  • Age 30-39, female: Callie Fuhrman (28.42, Pickford) placed first
  • Age 30-39, male: Daniel Scarpino (16.46, Sault, Ontario) placed first
  • Age 40-49, female: NeTausha Bergsma (32.18, Rudyard) placed first, Jennifer Peterman (33.58, Rudyard) was second and Heidi Kuehne (45.15, Rudyard) was third
  • Age 60-69, male: Terry Myers was first (29.05, Sault, Michigan) placed first, Nate Rudolph (29.37, Woodstock, Georgia) was second and Burton Rudolph (37.43, Kinston, North Carolina) was third
  • Age 70 and over, male: David Brock (52.47, Grand Rapids) placed first
