“Hordes” of runners braved natural and manmade obstacles on June 20 during the annual Barbarian Challenge at Noccalula Falls Park.

Hundreds of competitors from across the Southeast and elsewhere took part in the 6-mile run through the park and its surrounding terrain, vying for true barbarian prizes — overall male and female winners in the Elite Horde got “battle axes,” the second- and third-place finishers “weapons” — as well as participation medals and the satisfaction of meeting the challenge.

Neophyte barbarians also got a chance to compete in the half-mile Kids Challenge.

According to the Barbarian Challenge’s website, competitors must demonstrate determination, dedication and drive.

“This race isn’t just for anyone. It’s for the brave, the strong, the fierce. For those who train harder than they play. No, this isn’t your grandmother’s 5K,” the website states. “It requires dedication to get through some pretty insane obstacles that stand between you and greatness.”

The Barbarian Challenge at Noccalula Falls Park was first held in 2011.

Park officials say the Barbarian Challenge is the facility's second-largest event each year, eclipsed only by the Christmas at the Falls light show that draws more than 100,000 visitors during its five-week run in November and December.
