Tough to be stoked about this - that 2023 Dline was bare bones and several high draft picks + over 100 million invested in the front 7 and we are back to signing members of the 2023 dline.

Aside from Nolen and Sweat- lot of JAGs on this front 7

Here's what The Athletic's Daniel Popper had to say about this signing:
Cardinals bolster interior DL with Roy Lopez
Top 150 ranking: 108

Reported deal: 2 years, $11.5 million
Grade: A

Lopez is a run-stuffing nose tackle with a stout, strong lower half and quick feet. He can take on double-teams. He can cover two gaps when taking on a lineman one-on-one, showing the ability to stack, read the running back and shed. Lopez also has some pass-rush upside because of a relentless motor and the vision to find lanes late in downs. The Cardinals defense struggled against the run last year, finishing 25th in EPA per designed rush and 24th in defensive success rate, according to TruMedia. Lopez will give the unit a lift in this phase, with Nick Rallis staying on as coordinator under new coach Mike LaFleur. — Popper

Roy Lopez was a solid player when he was here. No problem with this for the money.

He was a good locker room guy too. AZ guy, loved it here, didn't want to leave. Coaches often raved about his energy and leadership.

I imagine this was Rallis banging the drum.

We're fixing our DL by bringing in the backups from a bad former DL. Monti playing 1D chess lol
He's a role player, part of a rotation.

Many of the naysayers here whined about Lopez and Tongs and they both went to good teams and played. Tonga was especially good last year.

Neither are difference makers and the Cardinals needed one. Hopefully Nolen comes back soon because this line is going to be bad if he doesn't, and it still probably won't be very good.

Every FA signing has to be a big deal or it sucks. Thems the rules.

I understand that, and I wouldn't mind having him if that's all he was. Do you actually have faith that Monti will bring in a difference maker, or is it just going to be a rotation of guys to "fix" the spot?

This is bull. It is not unrealistic to think a team that has to start 3 DL players and use those players in a rotation, have more than one better than replacement level player in that group. Gannon stated all last year guys weren't winning one on one matchups and we have chosen to still not add guys who can win one on one matchups.

I mean, it's a good job it's only day 1 of FA then. I probably wouldn't be judging the roster yet based on a nose tackle and a guy with $750k guaranteed.

People make this argument most years and are consistently proven wrong.

Dante Stills
Walter Nolen
Darius Robinson
Roy Lopez
LJ Collier

Do they probably add one or two more players depending on Nolen's health? Yes. Does waiting and being patient give you the best shot at the highest quality of players in FA? No.

As I have said in other threads, I am confident in my position that Monti will fail based on this history of actions. I will risk having egg on my face stating that Monti will not be able to add two more above replacement level DL players. You can miss me with your wait and see confidence.

Who's "waiting and being patient"? It's day two of the legal tampering period.

But the FA DL options were poor anyway. The best DL available are Calais Campbell followed by nearly 35 year old Shelby Harris.

I would agree we need CC back.

It’s so funny. I remember late in the season in one of the “other games threads” There were a couple posters saying that Roy Lopez has looked great and played very well for Detroit and we should’ve never let him go, that that was a mistake by Monti. Now that the Cardinals have re-signed him, everybody’s laughing at it. Can’t make it up. This board is as bipolar as Monti.

Not laughing at the signing itself--it's a good depth signing--but laughing that the plan is not likely to garner actual starting talent.

I like the signing, maybe not a difference maker but he plays the run well. We still have time to sign or draft others.

If you always bet against the Cardinals, history shows you'd come out a winner more often than not.

The nuance of it is that it has more to do with what you are signing Roy Lopez for than the signing of Roy Lopez. Signing Roy Lopez to be your 30% NT or backup NT is a nice move. He gives you a league average NT on your roster. However, the nature of the NT position is that the impact is limited because they don't rush the passer and so many teams run nickel where you have to get home with 4 because you are dropping 7 in coverage. Lopez does not help this.

Maybe Lopez has a huge impact for AZ because they are going to get boat raced so much that teams will be running the ball vs AZ at a higher rate? There is some more optimism from me.
