Tyler Samaniego's Wednesday morning began with news that he was being recalled from Triple-A Worcester to the big league's ahead of the Boston Red Sox's afternoon home game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers.
The 27-year-old left-hander detailed his emotions of the day before the contest, explaining that he would be making his MLB debut for his late father, who passed away in 2022.
Samaniego was called upon right away, making his first big league appearance in the top of the eighth of the Red Sox's 5-0 win.
He was impressive, striking out the side and issuing one walk in a scoreless inning of work.
It turns out that Samaniego's effort was something not seen by a Boston pitcher in 49 years.
"Tyler Samaniego's late father introduced him to the game. As Samaniego made his MLB debut, he did so with his dad on his heart -- and his glove, with 'Rip, Pops' stitched onto it," The Athletic posted on Bluesky Thursday afternoon. "The result? Joining rarified Boston Red Sox air, becoming the first Red Sox pitcher since Don Aase in 1977 to record a strikeout on each of his first three career outs."
Don Aase pitched the first of his 13 MLB seasons with the Red Sox in 1977, going 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 92 1/3 innings covering 13 games (all starts). Aase is perhaps best known in Boston as the player who was traded to the California Angels in exchange for Red Sox legend Jerry Remy.
The one-time All-Star wasn't much of a strikeout pitcher over the years, recording 641 punchouts in 1,109 1/3 innings, but racked up a career-high 11 in his MLB debut on July 26, 1977 (ironically against the Brewers).
Samaniego was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft and he advanced to Double-A each of the last four seasons.
The Red Sox landed the University of South Alabama product in a December trade with the Pirates.
