Boston Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez delivered encouraging news about his recovery timeline following shoulder surgery this week. The versatile 29-year-old underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his left shoulder, and he described the outcome as ideal heading into the 2026 regular season.

Gonzalez said his surgery was a “best-case” scenario, per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey. He went in knowing he’d get surgery but not sure if it would be a labrum tear. Instead it was just a cleanup procedure and he’s planning to be back as soon as he’s eligible to return from the 60-day IL in late May.

The Red Sox placed Gonzalez on the 60-day injured list shortly after the procedure performed by Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas. While the injury will sideline him for the first two months, the fact that it avoided major structural damage represents a significant relief. With Opening Day approaching on March 26, Boston will lean on other options early but can look forward to Gonzalez’s return bolstering the bench by late May.

Gonzalez’s absence early in the year comes at a time when the Red Sox are still sorting out roster flexibility, but the positive update keeps expectations high for his contributions once healthy.

In 2025, Gonzalez enjoyed a breakout season with the Red Sox, batting .305 with nine home runs, 53 RBI and 47 runs scored across 96 games. He posted a .826 OPS while showing improved plate discipline and power from his previous years. His defensive versatility made him a key bench piece, helping Boston navigate injuries and matchups throughout the campaign.
