The Houston Rockets face a pivotal decision on Fred VanVleet's future with the franchise after their Game 7 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
VanVleet and the Rockets struggled to generate offense in the 103-89 loss that ended their season. Houston was looking to complete a comeback after falling behind 3-1 in the series but came up short in Game 7.
VanVleet played a staggering 44 minutes in Houston’s season-ending loss, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Throughout the series, his veteran leadership proved invaluable, helping keep the Rockets competitive. VanVleet averaged nearly 40 minutes per game and ranked second on the team in scoring with 19.0 points per contest, behind only Alperen Sengun. He also posted three consecutive games of 25-plus points before the finale.
The Rockets now face a critical decision on VanVleet's future. As it stands, Houston holds a $44.9 million team option on VanVleet for the 2025-26 season.

"I think both sides want to be here and want him here," Rockets coach Ime Udoka said after Sunday's loss. "He’s a huge part of our growth. Love everything he’s done. Perfect combo of on and off ball for our guards and young guys to grow. I’d love to have him back and I think the feeling’s mutual."
The Rockets could opt to decline VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option and instead pursue a longer-term deal at a lower annual cost. While VanVleet averaged 14.1 points during the regular season, he shot just 37.8% from the field — his lowest mark since his rookie year.
