Penn State will be trotting out a starting quarterback who wasn’t a highly-rated prospect for the first time in years. Rocco Becht is a talented player who had some solid production at Iowa State, but he doesn’t have the pedigree of some of the big-name players in college football. However, that isn’t stopping people from giving him recognition and placing expectations on him.

The Maxwell Award, voted on by a myriad of people both inside and outside of college football, is presented to the best all-around player in the nation. Maxwell Football Club recently published their watch list for the award and Becht appeared as the only Nittany Lions player on the list.

Not only is he given a boost because of his familiarity with coach Matt Campbell and his scheme, but he’s also built a rapport with a number of players he’ll be throwing the ball to. Wide receivers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen followed their coach over to Penn State along with Becht and will now have a chance to improve upon the chemistry they’ve built with their quarterback.

Becht should also be able to lean on a strong running game to take some of the pressure off him this upcoming season. There are a ton of factors to suggest that if the new Penn State starter doesn’t have an excellent season, he at least has enough support under him to prevent him from failing.

The Nittany Lions have a chance to make 2026 a special year if they can capitalize on a favorable schedule and unprecedented cohesion for a new-look roster. If that ends up happening, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Becht isn’t a significant catalyst.
