ARLINGTON, TX – Detroit Tigers left fielder Riley Greene was an absolute force in a 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Sunday, July 5.
Greene, who was named to his third-straight All-Star Game on Saturday, hit a homer, a triple, knocked in four runs and made one of the prettiest catches you will ever see. A leaping, reaching, soaring snag to rob Brandon Nimo of an extra base hit.
Casey Mize had another impressive starting pitching performance for the Tigers – he allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings – as the Tigers (40-50) earned another complete-team win, their fifth of this critical six-game road trip.
This series win over Texas (45-45) was huge for the Tigers in their sprint against the trade deadline, trying to win as many games as possible, attempting to keep this team together. And this was no easy task. The Rangers had won six of their last seven games before playing the Tigers.
The Tigers have gone 18-12 in 30 games starting June 1, the best record in the American League in this span.
MORE TIGERS: Even 3-time All-Star Riley Greene has room to improve for Tigers
The Tigers couldn’t get anything going early against Kumar Rocker, the Texas righty.
Not until the fourth inning.
After a Kerry Carpenter single, Greene smashed a majestic, 421-foot homer, demolishing a four-seam fastball. It was his 13th of the season.
One of the attributes the Tigers love about James Outman is his ability to run. And in the fifth inning, Outman had an infield single, getting on because of his legs, sparking a four-run inning. He went first to third on a Kevin McGonigle single. And that put Outman in perfect position to score when Dillon Dingler singled.
Then, Greene hit his two-run triple, missing only the double for a cycle.
In the ninth, Matt Vierling hit a triple, bringing up Greene and giving him a chance. But the Rangers intentionally walked him – an understandable move but come on man! Let him hit.
To be fair, the move worked when Spencer Torkelson ended the inning by hitting a force out to short.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch pulled Mize into his office on Saturday after the All-Star Game announcements.
“Because he didn't make the All-Star team, and I didn't want it to go unnoticed what he's done for our team,” Hinch said on Sunday. “When he establishes his fastball, he's got multiple secondary pitches. He's pretty bullish in the strike zone. He has a reason behind everything that he does, and then he puts it all together in a game, and he's done it time after time after time.”
And Mize got the start on Sunday for the Tigers. “Fun guy to watch pitch, because it's a combination of cerebral approach and stuff, and when those two things come together, it's hard to beat,” Hinch said.
Mize looked like an All-Star, allowing just two runs. He scattered five hits, struck out four and walked two.
Mize also benefited from some great defense.
In the second inning, McGonigle had a beautiful catch, a Superman dive, taking away a hit from Elias Diaz. That became even more significant when the next hitter, Josh Smith, hit a perfectly placed line drive that turned into a triple.
After Mize walked Cam Cauley, he was visited by pitching coach Chris Fetter. That seemed to settle Mize down and he got Nicky Lopez to ground out to third.
Drew Anderson pitched in relief and Ezequiel Duran crushed a homer to center, cutting the Tigers lead to 6-3.
Hinch turned to Kenley Jansen, who earned a clean, quick save.
