This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired All-Pro running back Ricky Williams.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Williams discussed his partnership with Panini America after being hosted along with several other NFL players and legends at the Panini Prizm VIP lounge in San Francisco during Super Bowl LX week.
"I was a huge collector of trading cards (growing up), and one of my favorite things to do is bring my bring my kids, because I was a big collector," said Williams, "but we didn't have a lot, my parents didn't have a lot of extra money, it was a rare occasion that I could get a new pack, and rarely ever could I buy a card that I wanted. My fondest memories are sitting with my baseball cards and my football cards and my binder, trading with my friends."
Many mock drafts over the years have criticized the idea of selecting a running back in the first round, similar to Williams, who went 5th overall in the 1999 NFL Draft. He gave his take on when teams should consider selecting a running back, as the Chiefs are widely considered favorites to do so with Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love this April.
"I think it's not bad general advice, but I think there are two exceptions. I think one, when you have a team in, the missing piece that you feel is a running back, then I think it's, it's worth it, maybe, to get one in the first round," said Williams, "When you have a special player, I think guys like Bijan Robinson are special talents. (These) Superstars happen to play running back. I think those are the two cases where you have to take a running back in the first round."
Williams played for 11 seasons in the NFL and one season in the CFL. He retired in 2012 after surpassing the 10,000 career rushing yards mark and becoming the 26th player in the history of the NFL to achieve that status.
