The Seattle Seahawks are apparently still monitoring the veteran edge rusher market, including someone who has a history with both the Seahawks and head coach Mike Macdonald.
Jordan Schultz reported on Wednesday that the Cleveland Browns have met with Clowney for their own possible reunion. He noted that an NFC West team had also expressed interest in his services, then fellow NFL insider Aaron Wilson went a step further and said both the Seahawks and Houston Texans have kept tabs on the 33-year-old.
Clowney last played for the Dallas Cowboys, appearing in 13 games and recording 8.5 sacks, only one sack behind his career high, which he managed with both the Texans and his one season in Mike Macdonald’s Baltimore Ravens defense. The former number one overall pick has played for six teams since the Texans traded him to the Seahawks in 2019, when he had just three sacks but recorded a pick-six, a fumble return touchdown, and led the team with 13 QB hits.
Unlike in 2019, when Clowney was effectively tasked to be Seattle’s primary pass rusher on a sub-par defense, he wouldn’t have such a situation in a second go-round. Add in his ability to play the run and it’s easy to see why, despite Clowney’s injury history and bouncing around the league, the Seahawks might kick the tires on a Clowney reunion.
Ultimately, the interest may just max out at exactly that, especially when Seattle already signed Dante Fowler Jr earlier in the offseason. We’ll keep tabs on whether or not the Seahawks make a move for one more veteran before the regular season starts.
