Big queues formed outside the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey ahead of the World Cup final and there were empty seats just 20 minutes before kick-off due to a FIFA ticket glitch, reports said.
Widespread media published photographs of the queues and the gaps in the stadium were noticeable as kick-off between Spain and Argentina approached.
Press also complained of difficulties accessing the stadium, where a first ever World Cup final half-time show is also happening.
The biggest ever 48-team World Cup spread over the United States, Mexico and Canada has been dogged by controversy on and off the field.
Germany 2014 world champion Christoph Kramer also criticized the final pitch.
"It’s like a skittles alley with a carpet laid over it. For Spain in particular, it’s a different kind of football match," Kramer told German broadcaster ZDF.
