Fans of the NBA were surprised by a trade of Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday (June 25) morning. But that unexpected transaction is rumored to have come at the expense of a swap with the Boston Celtics for an unnamed return according to recent reporting from New York Times Timberwolves beat writer John Krawczynski.
Per the New York Times reporter, the "Wolves did have discussions with the Celtics on Jaylen Brown as well" as the deal for the Hornets floor general. But for whatever reason, his sources told him, Minnesota's front office "saw LaMelo Ball as fitting more of what they needed, for likely less compensation going out."
It must, as always, be stressed that such reports must always be taken with a grain of salt, but it seems reasonable to assume that whatever the current dynamic between Brown and Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens, that teams are very likely calling the Celtics front office to determine whether a trade might be had in the wake of Boston's failed pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
However, it also seems that if the Celtics are taking calls for Brown, they are asking for a haul – as they ought to in order to even entertain such a move, never mind pull the trigger.
And at least at present, it seems ball clubs like Minnesota are okay with aiming lower in terms of established talent given the likely steep cost of dealing for the Georgia native.
