Despite being deep into the offseason, Texas Tech has made waves in the college football world after public statements regarding the Red Raiders’ scheduled Week 1 game against Abilene Christian.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that Texas Tech head football coach told reporters in a Zoom meeting Thursday that Tech was exploring the possibility of canceling its Week 1 game against ACU and potentially scheduling a Week 1 showdown against the Texas Longhorns for the Red Raiders instead.

Texas is currently scheduled to play Texas State in their first game of the 2026 college football season on Sept. 5 in Austin.

Texas Tech would reportedly be required to pay ACU at least $375,000 per contractual agreements between the two athletic departments whether the game happens or not.

Abilene Christian would receive $375,000 from Texas Tech if the game happens as scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Lubbock. Tech would owe ACU $1 million if the Red Raiders cancel the game against the Wildcats.

ACU — which is scheduled to play against Texas Tech on September 5, 2026, in Lubbock — addressed the reports regarding any potential Week 1 scheduling changes via a statement Thursday night:

“We are planning on playing Texas Tech as scheduled on Sept. 5 in Lubbock. We look forward to playing the Red Raiders barring any changes.”

Abilene Christian and Texas Tech last faced on the football field during Week 1 of the 2024 college football season in Lubbock, when the Red Raiders defeated the Wildcats 52-51 in overtime.

The Wildcats and Red Raiders are scheduled to kick off Week 1 of the 2026 season at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock. The game is set to be televised nationally on FS1.

Abilene Christian will start the 2026 campaign on the road with a Week 0 season opener against the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.

The Wildcats are also slated to play the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a rematch from the second round of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Abilene.

ACU will then hit the road again to take on the Idaho Vandals on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho, and finally round out its non-conference football schedule with another home game against the Mercer Bears on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Abilene.
