For the first time since its opening more than decade ago, ACU’s Elmer Gray Stadium will receive several major upgrades.
Abilene Christian University began construction on a series of renovations to Elmer Gray Stadium — the home of ACU’s soccer and track and field programs — in late May.
The stadium renovations, which are partially donor funded, are slated to be complete by mid-July with the facilities ready for use again by the start of the 2026-27 school year.
The project includes resurfacing the track inside Elmer Gray Stadium for the first time since it opened in 2015. Construction crews began removing the old purple track surface in late May.
The new track at Elmer Gray Stadium will instead be primarily gray with exchange zones painted purple.
The renovation plans call for resurfacing the event runways for long jumpers, high jumpers, triple jumpers and pole vaulters, and adding matching spring shoots on both sides of the stadium too.
A new video scoreboard will also be installed during the final phases of the stadium renovation.

In addition to serving as the home venue for the ACU Wildcats’ soccer and track and field programs, Elmer Gray Stadium also frequently hosts high-school level competition.
The stadium hosts the annual Wes Kittley Invitational high school track and field meet each spring, as well as multiple UIL regional track and field meets each year.
The stadium is also occasionally used as a neutral-site venue during the UIL Soccer Playoffs.
Elmer Gray Stadium opened in 2015 after the site of the original Elmer Gray Stadium — home of ACU’s track and field team from 1955-2014 — was converted into Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium to serve as the new home for ACU football when Abilene Christian moved up to the NCAA Division I level.
The venue is named after Elmer Gray, an ACU track and field alumnus who became the first Wildcat to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1932.
