The New York Giants signed veteran cornerback Greg Newsome II to a one-year, $8 million contract earlier in the offseason.
Newsome arrives in New York after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars. The talented cornerback was traded from Cleveland to Jacksonville in a midseason deal last year, but he struggled to make a consistent impact during his brief stint in the Jaguars’ secondary.
The former Browns standout shone on multiple occasions in Cleveland prior to the early October trade.
Newsome could bounce back in the Giants’ secondary this season, and ESPN analyst Jordan Raanan has listed the veteran as an early favorite to win the cornerback two role.
“The favorite entering training camp is Greg Newsome, the veteran that was signed as a free agent this offseason,” Raanan said this week. “Rookie Colton Hood, Deonte Banks, and even Art Green have an outside shot at earning that spot.”
Newsome could prove to be an excellent starting option opposite Paulson Adebo throughout the 2026 campaign. Banks and Hood have enjoyed strong offseasons leading into training camp, and the young duo remains in the mix for the CB2 role.
The Giants’ secondary will feature a promising mix of youth and veteran talent this season. While Newsome will need to perform at a high level throughout training camp to lock down a starting job, he remains the favorite for now.
