The Lions are making a practice squad roster move ahead of the Week 3 trip to Baltimore to face the Ravens on Monday night. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter (and others), the Lions are signing quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham to the team's practice squad.
Cunningham has played both quarterback and wide receiver in his NFL career, which began with the New England Patriots in 2023. He was the QB successor to Lamar Jackson at Louisville, working as a dual-threat athlete at the position. After working as a practice squad QB in New England, he moved onto Baltimore. The Ravens converted the 6-foot-1, 186-pound Cunningham to wide receiver after signing him off the Patriots practice squad near the end of the 2023 NFL season.
Cunningham spent the 2024 season in Baltimore learning to play wide receiver. He was among the roster cutdowns this preseason after making just one catch for -3 yards in three games.
Cunningham's familiarity with the Ravens offense is certainly an appealing addition. Also, Cunningham offers some ability to emulate Lamar Jackson as the Lions' scout team quarterback.
Detroit doesn't currently have an opening on the practice squad, so a corresponding move will need to be made. The team is off on Tuesday.
