What the San Francisco 49ers do with the No. 27 overall pick of the 2026 NFL draft will play a role in determining what the team thinks of itself heading into this upcoming season. The 49ers could add a dynamic playmaker on offense or find some depth at positions of need on either side of the ball.
One position ESPN draft expert Matt Miller doesn't think San Francisco will target in the first round is offensive line. He wrote this week that the 49ers "don't necessarily view offensive tackle as a Round 1 priority." Miller added that wide receiver appears to be the position the team is looking at more closely.
Offensive line, edge rusher and receiver have been the three positions draft experts have cycled between at the No. 27 pick for San Francisco, but it sounds as though the former might be one to cross off for now. Some of that speculation centered on the future of almost-38-year-old offensive tackle Trent Williams, who is aging and in a contract dispute with the team.
If the 49ers are truly not looking at the offensive line in the first round, it could be signal talks with Williams are progressing positively and the team feels comfortable enough with him and the rest of the starters to draft a different position at No. 27. It also could mean the team likes other prospects at offensive line on Day 2 or Day 3 in the draft, where they have one pick in the second-round (No. 58) and four picks in the fourth round (Nos. 127, 133, 138 and 139).
The other piece of history to recognize here, as ESPN 49ers reporter Nick Wagoner noted, is that the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch contingent has drafted just one offensive lineman in the first-round during their time together on the team: Tackle Mike McGlinchey in 2018. So if the 49ers deviated from history, it would need to be for someone worth it. And that player might not exist at the No. 27 pick.
Whatever the case may be, the 49ers' draft plans appear to be materializing in the weeks leading up to the first round.
