The Bakersfield College men’s and women’s tennis teams have competed in the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles tournament since Tuesday and will do so through Saturday at Ventura College.
On Thursday, the WSC announced all-conference selections and individual awards, too. The BC men’s team, which captured the conference title last week, earned numerous all-WSC honors, including two of the top individual awards.
Mateusz Lipczynski was named the WSC Men’s Player of the Year. A freshman from Warsaw, Poland, Lipczynski has been the top singles player and a solid doubles player for this Renegades conference championship team. He came into the WSC Singles and Doubles Tournament as the No. 1 seed in singles play. He went into Friday’s tournament action playing in the semifinal round of singles and in doubles with his partner, Orlando Vankan.
Noel Dalton, who has been BC tennis coach since 2018, was named WSC Men’s Coach of the Year. Dalton played tennis at BC in 1983 and 1984. He and volunteer assistant coach Hank Pfister Jr., a former pro tennis player and also a former Renegades player, directed BC to its first WSC team championship since BC joined the WSC in 1987.
Lipczynski and Dalton are the first BC recipients of these WSC honors since Adrian Bolton and then-head coach Rob Slaybaugh did it in the same year, 1996, following a second-place WSC team finish for the Renegades.
Here’s the complete list of all BC men’s players and their conference honors: Singles: First team, Lipczynski and Axl Lajon Gonzaga; Second team: Shang En Kao and Vitalie Chibac. Doubles: First team, Gonzaga/Kao, Lipczynski/Vankan; Second team, Zeb Duket/Chin Chang Wu.
For the WSC women’s all-conference selections, BC sophomores Naomi Pavletich and Kailani Lua were honorable mention singles selections and were honorable mention as a doubles team.
In the women’s WSC singles and doubles tournament, Lua, who had a first-round bye and then won her first two matches, lost on Friday afternoon to the No. 1 seed, College of the Canyons’ Emma Chodur. Lua was scheduled to play in a doubles match with Pavletich.
The WSC tournament action concludes Saturday.
BC SWIMMING
The BC men’s and women’s swim teams will host their lone meet of the season on Saturday at a 10 a.m. tri-meet with Santa Maria’s Allan Hancock and Fresno City. The meet will be held at Garces High School, which has served as a temporary practice pool for the Renegades during season-long construction at their on-campus pool space.
“The move has definitely been a big adjustment, but Garces has been great to us,” BC Coach Matt Moon said.
It appears Moon has solid expectations for Saturday’s meet.
“We just came off a big week of training over spring break, so I’m hoping to see some clean swimming,” he said. “Everyone is in great shape mentally and physically going into this meet and excited to compete in Bakersfield.”
Saturday’s meet will be the final tune-up meet for the Western State Conference championships scheduled for April 16-18.
“We have a couple more weeks to fine-tune all the details of the swims and mentally lock in for three big days of racing at the WSC championships,” Moon said.
HIGH SCHOOLS
As spring break winds down for local high schools, and as spring sports teams trained, practiced, played in an out-of-town tournament or were able to rest a bit, early April is the time for league play to start up.
A few highlights this week should include a three-game baseball series between defending South Yosemite Valley League champion Bakersfield Christian — which traveled to Sacramento to play in the Boras Northern Classic — and Ridgeview, the defending Central Section Division 2 champions and CIF Division 4 Southern California (state) regional champions. The Wolf Pack played in a San Diego Lions Tournament last week. The Eagles and Wolf Pack will play Monday, Wednesday and Friday, each game starting at 4 p.m. BCHS hosts Monday and Friday games.
Another baseball series of note could be Frontier and Stockdale in the South Yosemite River League. These teams will play Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m. Frontier hosts Tuesday and Friday.
There’s the annual Lonnie Shelton Track and Field Invitational that will be packed with local team entrants at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Foothill High School.
More distant is the April 17 boys and girls swim meet between Garces and Liberty at the McMurtrey Aquatics Center in downtown Bakersfield. Two of the top South Yosemite River League teams will swim starting at 3:30 p.m.
CSUB ROUNDUP
Baseball: The Roadrunners fell 14-4 in Thursday’s opening game of a three-game, non-conference series at home against Utah Valley. The Wolverines scored five runs in the third inning and combined for eight more runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to take the first game. CSUB’s defense had four errors. The Roadrunners got three of their runs in the seventh inning on RBI hits by Jacob May and Elgin Bennett and a sacrifice fly by Devon Wilkes. The teams played again Friday night and will conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. game Saturday at Hardt Field.
Softball: The Roadrunners played the Big West Conference Tournament opening game of a three-game series at home against Cal Poly on Friday. CSUB, which went into the game with a 6-27 overall mark and 4-8 in conference, had gone 2-2 in the opening game of four Big West series, including against UC Santa Barbara last week. The Roadrunners and Mustangs will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m.
Beach volleyball: CSUB dropped its first two matches of this weekend’s Islanders Tournament, being hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Roadrunners (7-18) battled but lost to tournament host A&M CC, 3-2. CSUB was then swept 5-0 by Pepperdine to complete Friday’s action. The team will play Louisiana Monroe and Tarleton State on Saturday morning.
