The Bakersfield Condors are suddenly on a two-game losing streak after a tough back-to-back weekend of games. AHL Pacific Division leader Colorado scored a 4-1 victory over the Condors last Friday at Dignity Health Arena. The next day, Bakersfield went to San Jose for a meeting with the Barracuda and lost, 5-3.
Bakersfield’s attempt to pull even with the Eagles for a share of the division lead came to a halt. Colorado scored first in the opening period and made it 2-0 in the second before Ethan Keppen’s first goal of the season cut it to 2-1 at the 16:27 mark.
Colorado’s Alex Barre-Boulet scored 4:53 into the third period for the insurance goal and his third point of the night (two assists, goal). Colorado also scored on an empty net late to seal the victory.
In San Jose, the Condors had a 2-1 lead after the first period on a power-play goal by Quinn Hutson, his 24th overall of the season and 11th goal on the man-advantage, and the fourth goal of the season by Damien Carfagna. San Jose tied it up early in the second period, but Josh Brown’s second goal of the season gave Bakersfield the lead again.
The Barracuda scored three goals in the final period, including an empty net tally to win in regulation. The loss was Bakersfield’s first in regulation on the road, snapping a 10-game streak. Goaltender Connor Ungar lost his first start of the season after a six-game win streak. He stopped 38 of 42 shots on goal.
The Condors, after Saturday’s loss, still maintained third place in the division with 50 points (22-12-6). Colorado, however, lost at Ontario and the latter is now the division leader. There’s still lots of AHL hockey to play so expect there to be many back-and-forth changes in the standings. Bakersfield will get back on the ice Wednesday for a 7 p.m. road game against Henderson.
BC men’s basketball
The Renegades rebounded from a blowout Western State Conference loss last Wednesday at Citrus (109-78) by nearly reaching 100 points themselves in a 96-80 victory Saturday at Los Angeles Valley.
The Renegades not only improved their record to 11-9 overall and evened their WSC record to 3-3, but they also did it with Markell Brooks scoring 30 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and being one of five BC players to score in double figures. Zach Garnett had 17 and made three 3-pointers, Goodwill Fomusoh had 15 points, and the return of leading scorer Zykiar Henderson to the lineup saw him get 12 points in 23 minutes. It was his first game back after missing the last two games. James Miller chipped in 10 for BC.
LA Valley (5-14, 0-6 WSC) couldn’t stop the Renegades much early on. BC led by 14 at halftime, 47-33. The teams combined for 96 points in the second half. Brooks scored 18 of his points in the second half and nine of his rebound total.
After two road games, the Renegades will play its next game at home, 5 p.m. Wednesday against College of the Canyons to close out the first half of WSC play.
BC women’s basketball
The freshman-dominated Renegade women’s basketball team passed a test on Saturday, scoring a 70-63 Western State Conference road victory against L.A. Valley to move ahead of the Monarchs in the WSC standings.
Leading 43-29 at halftime, BC was outscored in the third quarter, 22-10, to cut its lead to only two points entering the final 10-minute quarter.
But six points each from freshmen Alexia Ramirez and Jamie Neaderbaomer and five from Danika Tolentino in the final quarter was enough for BC to improve to 5-1 in WSC (13-7 overall). LA Valley fell to 7-13 and 4-2 in the WSC.
Tolentino led BC with 21 points and Ramirez had 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six steals in a solid all-around performance. Neaderbaomer and Lailene Araniva each had 10 points. Araniva also had 13 rebounds.
The Renegades will host Canyons at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the second game of a WSC doubleheader, following the BC men’s game at the Renegade Athletic Complex gym.
BC baseball
The Renegades baseball team got into the swing of the new season with a two-game home series sweep of Moorpark, winning 12-10 on Friday and then a 10-5 triumph on Saturday.
The bats were connecting all weekend. On Friday, BC had 13 hits and yet still needed to finish strong as nine of Moorpark’s runs came in innings seven through nine to make it close. BC’s offense had six extra-base hits — four doubles and two triples — to build the lead. It was 9-1 after six innings when Moorpark started its rally. Brady Baird had three hits, including two doubles and two RBI, for BC while Jordan Brito, Nick Martin and Luke Shaw each had two hits.
On Saturday, BC wasn’t always needing to hit — Moorpark pitching walked eight batters, including London McDonald four times — to get on the scoreboard. Jordan Brito and Jordan Mora each had two hits and the Renegades scored four runs in the eighth inning to help claim the second game.
Pitchers struggled on both sides. BC’s Jacob Berumen got the win on Friday, but still walked five batters and two runs in a 3 1/3-inning relief stint. BC used five pitchers Friday. On Saturday, Jayden Hernandez started and went 4 1/3 innings, but walked four. Logan Judd pitched a scoreless inning in relief and got the win. BC got four runs off Moorpark’s starter, Braden Huber, who took the loss.
BC returns to the field Tuesday for the first of two games with College of the Sequoias. Tuesday’s game is at 2 p.m. in Visalia and then a 2 p.m. Thursday game is at Gerry Collis Field.
BC women’s beach volleyball
The Renegades opened their season on the road at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, earning a split in two matches, a 5-0 sweep of El Camino in the opener, but then a 4-1 loss to Mt. SAC.
Against El Camino, BC’s top team of Maya Barron and Chloe Lopez won 21-8, 21-19, Keira Wolf and Amanda Zepeda won at No. 2, 21-8, 21-16, and Mariah Sierra and Anahi King were victorious at No. 3, 21-14, 23-21. Amber De La Cruz and Lainey Sterling took care of things as the fourth team, winning, 21-10, 23-21. The No. 5 pair of Ruby Hawkins and Anabel Naranjo closed out the match with a 21-16, 21-12 victory.
In the match with Mt. SAC, only the No. 1 pairing of Barron and Lopez earned a point, defeating the Mounties’ Emma Carson and Kayla Staveley, 21-18 and 21-11. BC had the same teams in place against Mt. SAC as when they faced El Camino earlier in the day.
The Renegades (1-1) will return to the sand courts for matches Friday at East Beach in Santa Barbara. They’ll face Fresno City at 10 a.m. and Hartnell at noon.
BC softball
It was a short season-opening game for the Renegades in a road game last Friday at Fresno City. The host Rams blanked BC, 8-0, in five innings. Fresno had two big innings, getting four runs in the second and three in the bottom of the fifth to close it out. They also got a solo home run in the first.
BC was limited to four hits on offense with Lexi Rolin getting two. BC also walked four times, but stranded eight on base.
Pitching wise, Lillian Visser started the game, but didn’t get out of the first inning, allowing the homer. Alexia Martinez (0-1) pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up five hits and seven runs, five earned. She walked four and struck out only one batter. She gave up the Rams’ second home run.
BC plays at 2 p.m. Tuesday against Saddleback in Mission Viejo. The Renegades’ home opener is at 1 p.m. Friday against Fresno City.
