Area Class A and B boys basketball teams tipped off region tournament play on Monday and Tuesday, March 1-2.
Region semifinal games are scheduled for Friday, March 16, with the winners advancing to SoDak 16 state-qualifying games on Tuesday, March 10.
State tourneys are slated for March 19-21 at Rapid City (Class A) and Aberdeen (Class B).
Here are scores and highlights from the March 2-3 region tourney games:
PREP BASKETBALL POLL: South Dakota's boys and Class AA girls basketball teams ready for postseason
Second-seeded Webster Area, third-seeded Britton-Hecla and fifth-seeded Milbank each recorded first-round wins on March 3.
At Webster, Jack Shoemaker's 29-point, 24-rebound performance carried Webster Area past seventh-seeded Redfield 85-64. Grady Hulscher led Redfield (3-18) with 29 points.
At Britton, the host Braves slipped past sixth-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli 59-54 behind Jaxon Zuehlke's 21 points. Chaz Vietor contributed 15 and Will Richter 14. Jesse Hernandez tallied 22 points, Bryson Olson 12 and Creighton Fisher eight for Roncalli (7-14).
Milbank survived a wild finish to win 48-45 at fourth-seeded Sisseton. The Bulldogs led 48-40 with just over a minute. Sisseton pulled within three points with 45 seconds remaining. After the two teams combined for four turnovers in the final nine seconds, Sisseton wasn't able to get off a final shot.
Sam Rick scored 18 points, Lincoln Holscher 10 and Jeter Scoular nine for Milbank. Brett Hansen had 14 points and Carter Stickland and Derrick Flute nine each for Sisseton (11-10).
Milbank (12-9) visits top-seeded Groton Area (16-4) and Webster Area (13-8) hosts Britton-Hecla (13-8) in semifinal games.
The top four seeds (No. 1 Aberdeen Christian, No. 2 Leola-Frederick Area, No. 3 Waubay-Summit and No. 4 Warner) each moved on with quarterfinal wins on March 3, all on their own home courts.
Aberdeen Christian (18-3) beat No. 9 Waverly-South Shore (4-18) 58-47, Warner (15-6) outlasted No. 5 Northwestern 66-57 in overtime, LFA (16-5) pulled away from No. 7 Wilmot 60-48 and Waubay-Summit pushed aside Hitchcock-Tulare 51-36.
Five players scored in double figures for Warner, led by Jesiah Baum's 13 points. Brennan Wolf-Donat added 12, Noah Bakeberg and Lincoln Kroll 11 each and Gage Knuppe eight. Jarren Haven tallied 17 points, Carson Ewalt 15 and Talon Miller 14 for Northwestern. Knuppe's field goal with seven seconds left in regulation forced overtime and Warner outscored Northwestern (13-8) 9-1 in the 4-minute extra period.
LFA advanced by getting 24 points from Milo Sumption, 14 from Winston Clark and 10 from Westyn Thorpe. Ethan Schwenn scored 14, Tyler Heinje 13 and Carson Jurgens eight for Wilmot (9-13).
Jace Wohlleber's 18 points and Hogan Hlavacek's 13 led the way for Waubay-Summit. Patrick Maynard tallied 12 and Deegan Moes and Devin Enander nine each for HT (8-13).
Aberdeen Christian hosts Warner and LFA hosts Waubay-Summit in the semifinals.
In tourney openers on March 1, Waverly-South Shore beat No. 8 Tiospa Zina 55-20 at Agency Village and host Wilmot slipped past No. 10 Langford Area 53-50. Kyle Kneeland produced 26 points and Spencer Ries 10 points and 13 rebounds for WSS. TZ ended its season at 4-17. Schwenn's 21 points and 14 rebounds led Wilmot, which also got 10 points from Asher Locke, seven points each from Heinje and Jurgens and eight rebounds from Maddux Foss. Kasen Keough (13 points, eight steals, five assists), Conner Clines (13 points, nine rebounds) and Case Reints (seven points) paced LA, which ended the season at 3-18.
Second-seeded Hamlin, third-seeded Sioux Valley and fourth-seeded Elkton-Lake Benton picked up quarterfinal wins at home on March 3.
Aiden Abraham's 24 points guided Hamlin past No. 7 Florence-Henry 73-33. Jackson Wadsworth chipped in with 16 points and Boden Stevenson and Jack Stormo each 12. FH (3-17) received 12 points from Carson Kelly and eight from Karson Rossow.
Sioux Valley advanced with a 59-44 victory over No. 6 Deuel (7-14). Brady Hiltunen's 18 points and nine rebounds sparked SV. Holdyn Ruesink and Brett Milton each contibuted nine points and Connor Relf eight. Carter Sapp hauled in 10 rebounds. Deuel's leaders were Kyle Finnesand with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jaxtin Winter seven and six and Sutton Benck seven and five.
ELB knocked off No. 5 Great Plains Lutheran 67-29. Joseph Nibbe finished with 18 points, Eliot Erickson 11 and Colt Beck nine for ELB. Lucas Johnson's nine points topped GPL (7-14).
ELB visits Clark-Willow Lake (18-2) at Clark and Sioux Valley visits Hamlin in the semifinals. Both games are set for 7 p.m.
Quarterfinal winners on March 3 included top-seeded De Smet, No. 2 Castlewood, No. 3 Wessington Springs and No. 4 Deubrook Area. All four won on their home courts
De Smet cruised past No. 8 Iroquois-Lake Preston 84-52 with Grant Wilkinson producing 24 points and 11 rebounds and Carter Wilkinson 24 and eight. Slayten Wilkinson contributed 17 points and seven rebounds, Noah Luethmers 15 points and Kolby Sinclair eight assists. ILP (9-13) was led by Lucas Peskey's 21 points and 10 rebounds. Rexton Blue added eight points and Brycen Blue seven.
Castlewood topped No. 7 James Valley Christian 70-51 with 16 points apiece from Kamden Keszler and Tyson Manley. Brody Bass and Leonard Wernke each added 10 points and Will Aderhold eight. Aderhold snared 11 rebounds, Bass nine and Wernke eight. Jayven Van Scharrel scored 14 points and Gavin Waldner 13 for JVC (12-10).
Chance Schoenfeld's 28 points and Braxton Bednarek's 21 helped Deubrook Area slip past fifth-seeded Estelline-Hendricks 55-51. Drayden Cokens finished with 19 points and Cade Hexem and Kade Hauck each 11 for EH (15-6).
In the other quarterfinal, Wessington Springs downed No. 6 Wolsey-Wessington 71-40.
De Smet (17-4) faces Deubrook Area (15-6) at 6 p.m. and defending state champion Castlewood (18-3) takes on Wessington Springs (17-4) at 7:30 p.m. in semifinal games in the Huron Arena.
In tourney openers on March 1, host ILP slipped past No. 9 Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 51-48 and host James Valley Christian topped No. 10 Arlington 73-42. Peskey scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for ILP, which also got seven points each from B. Blue and Carter Arbeiter. Arbeiter added nine rebounds and five blocks, Ervin Carter nine rebounds and Blue seven rebounds. Brodie Albertson tallied 21 points and Boyd Pooler 19 for ORR ((5-15). Arlington closed out its season at 2-19.
First-round scores on March 3 included No. 2 seed Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 86, No. 7 Crow Creek 23; No. 3 Mobridge-Pollock 63, No. 6 Platte-Geddes 56; and No. 4 Chamberlain 58, No. 5 Miller 48 in overtime.
All three winners won on their home courts.
Kale Knudson notched 20 points, Trueth Crow Ghost 15 and Kyson Goodshield nine for MP. Jameson Leader had 18 points, Jye Bailey 14 and Isaac Leader 10 for PG (11-10).
Derek Bruggeman's field goal with 10 seconds in regulation helped Miller (10-11) tie Chamberlain at 49. The Cubs, however, outscored the Rustlers 9-0 in the extra period.
In the semifinals, Chamberlain (12-9) visits No. 1 Stanley County (18-2) and Mobridge-Pollock (13-8) travels to CEB (18-3). Both games are set for 7 p.m.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK POLL: Ten area high school wrestlers nominated for our Athlete of the Week
Top-seeded Sully Buttes, No. 2 Ipswich, No. 3 Gettysburg and No. 4 Faulkton Area each recorded quarterfinal home-court wins on March 3.
Sully Buttes defeated No. 8 Highmore-Harrold 68-34, No. 2 Ipswich stopped Wakpala 57-39, No. 3 Gettysburg handled No. 6 Herreid-Selby Area 74-48 and Faulkton Area turned back North Central 67-44. HH finished 4-18, NC 10-11, Wakpala 8-13 and HSA 8-13.
Shay Knust (20 points), Jaxon Holt (12 points) and Hayden Schlosser (11 points and 10 rebounds) powered Ipswich. Bretten Wells had 16 points and Tavaughn Steele 10 rebounds for Wakpala.
In first-round games on March 1, Highmore-Harrold rolled past No. 9 Tiospa Zina 75-50 in Highmore and Wakpala posted a 64-44 home-court win over No. 10 Sunshine Bible Academy. TT finished 5-16 and SBA 1-20.
Semifinal games on March 6 include Faulkton Area (11-10) at Sully Buttes (16-5) and Gettysburg (10-11) at Ipswich (13-8).
