For the second consecutive season, the Cincinnati Reds have drafted a pitching prospect from the Florida State baseball program.
On Sunday, the Reds selected relief pitcher Brodie Purcell in the 12th round (pick 362) of the Major League Draft. In 2025, the Reds selected Seminoles pitcher Maison Martinez in the 16th round (pick 464).
At 6-3, 215 pounds, Purcell came out of the bullpen for coach Link Jarrett with a vengeance. In 18 appearances as a reliever during the 2026 season, Purcell posted a 5-2 record with a 4.97 ERA and recorded three saves. In 38 innings pitched, Purcell recorded 58 strikeouts and issued 21 walks. Purcell was stingy on the mound, allowing a batting average of just .207.
During the 2026 season, Purcell recorded six innings of scoreless and hitless ball. He logged a season-high four innings of work against NC State and a season-high seven strikeouts vs. Northern Illinois.
Before arriving in Tallahassee, Purcell played two seasons at USC. A California native, Purcell was a second-team All-Big Ten performer for the Trojans in 2025. That season, Purcell made 27 appearances and posted a 3-2 record with four saves. He finished with an ERA of 2.11, 51 strikeouts and 19 walks. Purcell allowed opposing hitters to bat just .177 against him.
As a freshman at USC, Purcell went 2-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 23 appearances. He pitched 29 innings, recorded 31 strikeouts, 17 walks and allowed a batting average of .219.
On Sunday, Purcell became the seventh Florida State player, and the fourth pitcher, to hear his name called in the MLB Draft. Fellow teammates and hurlers Trey Beard, Bryson Moore and Cole Stokes were also drafted on Sunday.
On Saturday, a trio of Seminoles were drafted in the first three rounds. In the second round, Florida State ace hurler Wes Mendes was selected by the Houston Astros. Mendes was the ACC Pitcher of the Year this past season. Also, on Saturday in the second round, first baseman Myles Bailey was chosen by the Chicago Cubs. Outfielder Brayden Dowd was selected in the third round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Despite a season-ending leg injury, the Cubs coveted Bailey’s power at the plate. At the time of his injury, Bailey was batting .363 with 13 home runs and 33 runs batted in.
Dowd belted 10 home runs, drove in 36 runs batted in, and drew an impressive 51 walks. For his efforts, Dowd earned third-team All-ACC honors.
Purcell, and his teammates listed above, have carried on the tradition of excellence that has forged the Florida State baseball program, one that continues to produce Major League talent.
