This could be an offseason of big changes for the Detroit Red Wings.
The Red Wings enter NHL free agency 2026 with many questions about the roster. The most prominent involves star captain and Michigan native Dylan Larkin, who has requested a trade from the team for which he has played his entire 11-year NHL career.
But there are other non-Larkin orders of business for Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman when the market opens Wednesday, July 1, at noon Eastern.
The Wings have plenty of cap space to make roster-improving moves with or without a Larkin trade, plus decisions to make regarding free agents Patrick Kane, Simon Edvinsson, James van Riemsdyk, David Perron and Cam Talbot.
It's possible the Red Wings will look very different from last year coming out of free agency, while the possibility remains to run it back with the same core that fell just short of the playoffs last season – the playoff-less streak is at 10 years, longest in the NHL.
