The calendar has officially flipped to July, meaning we are officially a month past the halfway point of the year, and into the first day of NHL free agency.
With Dylan Larkin‘s trade request still looming over the Red Wings franchise, Steve Yzerman is in an especially precarious position in a thin free agent market. Previous reports both from Yzerman and NHL insiders have indicated that the Red Wings are looking to add to compete this year. The Red Wings will also have to negotiate with the restricted free agents they submitted qualifying offers for, headlined by Simon Edvinsson.
Of Detroit’s current UFA crop, there has been most notably interest in bringing Patrick Kane back. However there have been reports that the veteran winger is exploring his options. If Kane does opt for the free agency, he’ll join Claude Giroux as one of the top names on the market. (That’s a sentence I doubt any of us expected to be seeing in 2026.)
Finally, as prospect development camp continues, three Red Wings draftees have been invited to the 2026 World Summer Junior Showcase to represent Team USA. The list includes the Red Wings first and second round picks from this year, JP Hurlbert and Victor Plante, and 2025 fourth round draftee Brent Solomon.

In Case You Missed It
The Red Wings did not extend a qualifying offer to Carter Mazur, meaning the winger is an unrestricted free agent. The team may opt to try and bring him in on a smaller contract given his injury history.
Bob Duff details how hockey with the Red Wings has become a family affair for the Plante brothers.
Red Wings Extra
While the hunt for the next backup goalie in Detroit can officially begin, former 20th overall pick Sebastian Cossa has already signed a contract extension with the Utah Mammoth. The former Grand Rapids Griffins netminder inked a two-year, four million dollar deal with Utah according to an announcement made on X. Cossa only appeared in one game for the Red Wings, a relief effort in December of 2024.
