Detroit — Red Wings players were excited to hear about a popular teammate returning to the organization.
The Wings on Wednesday night acquired forward David Perron from Ottawa for a 2026 conditional fourth-round pick.
Perron, 37, was with the Wings from 2022-24 and was a respected voice in the locker room, while scoring 41 goals combined in those two seasons.
Currently rehabilitating from sports hernia surgery, Perron is expected to be in the Wings' lineup before the end of March.
"He brings a lot of energy and speaks up, kind of a voice (in the locker room) in that way," forward Lucas Raymond said. "He's a great guy and he's familiar with a lot of guys on our team. It makes it a lot easier for him to come in here and hopefully he feels good soon and he'll be able to play.
"He's a veteran that's been around this league for a long time and he was good for us when he was here. It's fun to have him back."
Perron has 10 goals and 15 assists (25 points) in 49 games with the Senators this season. Perron had 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 43 games last season with the Senators.

Perron signed a two-year contract worth $8 million ($4 million annual average value) with Ottawa in the summer of 2024 after spending two seasons with the Wings.
"I never had the chance to coach David in any type of event but coached against him an awful lot and he's always been a factor when we played against him," coach Todd McLellan said. "He seems to drive a line, drives a team, and he's won before (2019 Stanley Cup in St. Louis). You take in the opinions around our locker room, from assistant coaches to trainers to even players, they're excited about having him come back and join the team."

McLellan said Perron is currently in Ottawa rehabbing, while the Senators are on a West Coast trip. Perron needs to resolve immigration issues before he can join the Wings, who leave for a week-long road trip beginning Sunday in New Jersey.
If Perron plays a game before the end of the regular season or during the playoffs, Ottawa receives a 2026 fourth-round draft pick. If the Wings advance to the second round and Perron appears in 50% of the first-round games, the Senators will receive a 2026 third-round pick.
The NHL trade deadline is Friday at 3 p.m.
