With the Boston Red Sox deciding to move on from many of their top prospects in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles for Adley Rutschman, there aren't many questions that now need to be answered at the catcher position for the organization.
The Red Sox have put themselves in a very good position behind the plate, and the hope is that Rutschman eventually figures some things out.
He's proven throughout parts of his career that he can be the best catcher in baseball, but there have also been some struggles in recent seasons. He's also dealing with an injury at the moment, the biggest concern for the Red Sox right now.
Beyond that, however, there's one question the Red Sox eventually have to answer, and it's coming a lot sooner than most fans probably realize. Rutschman, who has yet to sign an extension, is set to hit the free-agent market at the end of next season. That's something ESPN recently brought up as a potential problem.
“The Orioles drafted Rutschman with the No. 1 pick in 2019, but unlike Bobby Witt Jr., the second pick that year, he hasn't signed a long-term contract. Rutschman can become a free agent after next season,” ESPN wrote.
Rutschman's value will likely be hard to figure out.
There will be some who think he deserves to be paid like the best catcher in baseball, and he likely will be right up there because even throughout some of his struggles in recent years, he's still above average behind the plate.
The problem for the Red Sox is that they might not want to pay him as much as he's eventually looking for, which adds some intrigue to the situation after moving the type of prospect haul they did.
