With Triston Casas out for the season after rupturing his left patellar tendon, the Boston Red Sox are frantically searching for a replacement to play first base.

One such name being thrown around is designated-hitter Rafael Devers.

Devers, who signed a $331 Million, 11-year extension with Boston in January 2023, made it clear to reporters on Thursday, he isn't playing first base.

"I know I'm a ballplayer," Devers said via a translator, and relayed by The Boston Globe's Alex Speier. "but at the same time, they can't expect me to play every single position out there. In break training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove, that I wasn't going to play any other position but DH. so right now, I just feel like it's not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.”

Devers, a natural third baseman, was approached recently about the potential position change by Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.

“I’m not certain what (issue) he has with me. He played ball, and I would like to think that he knows that changing positions like that isn’t easy.” Devers said about Breslow.

After a horrendous slump to start the season, going hitless in the team's first five games, Devers has turned it around as of late. He hit .267 with five home runs and 18 RBI last month, and is batting .400 to begin the month of May. The 28-year-old was two-for-three with a home run and 2 RBI in Boston's 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday.

As reported by Christopher Smith of MassLive, Devers also gave his take on how the Rex Sox brass should fill the team's first base hole.

"Now I think they should do their job essentially and hit the market and look for another player (to play first base). I'm not sure why they want me to be in between the way they have me now."
