For the second time in as many days, the Boston Red Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds by a run. On Saturday, the Red Sox fought back after the Reds jumped out to an early deficit, but fell in extra innings. On Sunday, Boston jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on to win.

Starting pitcher Connelly Early exited the game with a two-run lead in the sixth inning. He left Matt McLain on first base, who singled to begin the sixth inning. Greg Weissert took over with one out in the inning and walked Sal Stewart to bring Eugenio Suarez to the plate as the go-ahead run.

Weissert jumped ahead of Suarez 0-2 and tried to elevate a four-seam fastball for the punchout. Suarez fouled the first fastball off to stay alive, and Weissert went back to the same pitch. This one stayed down and inside, and Suarez pulled it into the left field bleachers to give the Reds the lead.

After the game, Weissert held himself accountable.

"The report was fastballs up, it just didn't get up. Just can't miss there in that spot, especially after the walk," Weissert said.

The outing comes just one day after Weissert surrendered a solo home run to Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz in a one-run loss. The reliever was incredibly effective for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, but is off to a slow start for the Red Sox in 2026.

Weissert will likely get a day or two to rest after pitching on back-to-back days. The Red Sox start a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Monday.
