Boston Red Sox hurler Greg Weissert

The Boston Red Sox need to figure out what's going on with veteran reliever Greg Weissert.

Weissert was a monster for the Red Sox over the last two seasons. He had a 3.13 ERA in his first season with Boston across 62 total appearances in 2024. In 2025, he followed up with the best season of his career so far with a 2.82 ERA in 72 total outings for the Red Sox. On top of that, he had a 57-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 67 innings pitched.

Unfortunately, the 2026 season has been a mess for him so far, despite a great performance in the World Baseball Classic beforehand. Weissert entered the day with a 4.91 ERA in 16 outings ahead of Thursday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Weissert got into the action on Thursday, but wasn't able to log a clean outing. He entered in relief of Jake Bennett in the sixth inning and wasn't able to record an out while allowing a run. Now, his season ERA is 5.52. in 17 appearances.

After the game, he didn't hold back in the slightest, as transcribed by Christopher Smith of MassLive.com.

"
Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert: 'It’s not secret. I’m pitching like [explicit].'"

The Red Sox need Weissert at his best for this bullpen to be at its best overall. This isn't the start anyone expected, but there's time to turn things around.
