WORCESTER — Marcelo Mayer can’t really recall his first memories of playing baseball.

But at least the Red Sox prospect tried to dive into the old memory bank Wednesday afternoon.

“My first memories are just playing T-ball,” Mayer said. “I have a lot of video and film of me from T-ball that my dad recorded. So even though I don’t remember, I did see the videos.

“And then I enjoyed playing in my neighborhood as a kid, playing in high school with all my buddies that I grew up with. That was some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing baseball.”

And over the past two weeks, Mayer has added a few new baseball firsts to his memory roll.

After receiving a promotion to the Triple-A Worcester last summer, but never playing in a game due to a lumbar strain in his back, Mayer began this season healthy and in the WooSox Opening Day lineup.

The 22-year-old from California came into Wednesday’s doubleheader hitting .267 with two home runs, nine RBI and two walks across 30 at-bats and seven games. He’s started at shortstop (five games), third base (one) and second base (one), and started at shortstop and hit third for the WooSox to kick off a six-game series with the Columbus Clippers at Polar Park.

“It didn’t really feel like my first because I was here last year and I’ve played with a lot of these guys, so I didn't really feel like anything new or crazy,” Mayer said. “But as far as just Opening Day, it’s always exciting and to get your first hit of the season out of the way, it feels good.”

Mayer was promoted to Triple-A Worcester last August, along with former Sox prospect Kyle Teel and current WooSox teammate Roman Anthony, but landed on the injured list with a balky back and didn’t return in time to make his Triple-A debut.

Injuries have cut Mayer’s past two seasons short with the organization — he finished 2023 on the IL with left shoulder inflammation — but Boston’s No. 3 prospect (according to MLB.com rankings) is feeling good to start this season.

“I’m in a good spot,” Mayer said. “It’s a little cold. So, I feel about as good as you could in the cold.”

A former first-round draft pick (No. 4 overall) of the Red Sox in 2021, Mayer collected his first Triple-A hit on March 30 with a two-run single at Polar Park.

Two days later, the left-handed hitter launched a three-run blast at Vystar Ballpark in Jacksonville, Florida, for his first Triple-A homer.

“It’s always good hitting a homer,” Mayer said. “And the first one of the season, I hit it pretty well. So those are always cool to watch.”

After telling Adam Jones and Rich Keefe in an interview last month on WEEI that he felt like he earned a spot on the Boston Red Sox roster out of spring training, Mayer told the T&G on Wednesday that he’s enjoyed the WooSox clubhouse and staff so far this spring. Mayer is currently focused on helping his team bounce back from a tough road trip in Florida as the WooSox begin their second homestand of the season.

“We have a really good team,” Mayer said. “So it should be a fun year.”

And it’s been a fun start to the 2025 season for Marcelo Mayer. With a few firsts to add to his baseball memory book.
